What is Hypnotherapy?

HIstory of HypnosisHypnosis is a very relaxing experience.  It is an altered state of consciousness between being awake and being asleep.  In Greek mythology, the god of sleep was Hypnos.  Hypnotherapy comes from two words:  hypnos (sleep) and a Latin word therapeau (God's work).  So we can say one is doing God's work while in a sleep-like state.

In my practice, I offer suggestive therapy as well as regression therapy.  Once the hypnotic state is induced, suggestions are given according to the person's goals for change.  Because one is in an altered state, the messages go directly to the subconscious.  This way they are much more effective.

If there is no change after a couple sessions of suggestive work, there may be a block and regression therapy could be more helpful.

For people who are curious or adventurous, I also offer past-life regression.

History of Hypnosis

HIstory of HypnosisHypnosis is a natural state so it's easy to see that humans have always used it and have been able to see its advantages.  There were sleep temples in ancient Egypt, the Delphi Oracle in Greece as well as tribal rituals like fire walking and body piercing.

Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) used hypnosis in his early work.  He had a theory called psychic determinism which stated symptoms had a cause deep within the unconscious and once the cause was found, symptoms disappeared and there was a cure.

Milton Erickson (1901-1980) was a very famous American psychiatrist and hypnotherapist.  He stated we all enter hypnosis several times a day.  This can occur during common activities such as meditation, reading, watching TV, daydreaming or even driving a car.

Transpersonal Hypnotherapy -- This is the most recent approach to hypnotherapy.  Transpersonal means crossing of mind, body and spirit.  This approach assumes we humans are spiritual beings in a physical experience.  Hypnotherapy can be used to bring mind, body, spirit into balance and harmony.

My training and work has been and continues to be the transpersonal method.
